Five Career Investments That Cost Less Than A Cup Of Starbucks

It’s hard to know what to spend your money on when you’re just starting out and have a budget about as big as your first studio apartment.

Here are five ideas for investments you can make for your career that cost less than your morning coffee run.

Join a young professionals network
Professional organizations give you the forum to grow your network, build your own personal brand, and learn from like-minded professionals. From my experience, your employer may even sponsor you!

Attend lectures and keep in the know
Whether you subscribe to newsletters, attend industry lectures, seminars or breakfasts or just have a list of cool things you’d like to attend this year, saving some dosh so you can go and see industry professionals in person is a great investment. You can even network with them afterwards!

Learn a new skill
Just because we are done with school doesn’t mean we should stop taking classes. Sites like Skill Share offer free online courses, workshops, and tutorials in things like photography, design, cooking, technology and more. I have found the more you know, the more you realize how much you don’t know. Keep learning, growing and expanding your skill set. It’s amazing how the seemingly little things, or things completely unrelated to your job, come in handy when making connections at work.

Read up
Being on top of industry trends will give you an edge and something impressive and interesting to talk about as you ride the elevator with your colleagues. Keep checking the news app on your phone, search for trade related websites and keep up to date with all the latest news.

Ensure your online presence is stellar
What does your LinkedIn profile say about you? Make sure the first impression you are giving people is the right one. You are in complete control of the identity you portray in a profile online.

Huma Abedin: Unmissable Style

Huma Abedin is a well-known politician who has backed Hillary Clinton since 2008, though she was hired as her intern in 1996. Now, she serves as vice chairwoman of Hillary’s campaign and makes many appearances alongside the Democratic nominee. While Huma could keep her wardrobe to neutral shifts and black pumps, she’s had plenty of time to experiment. Keeping things plain is not her cup of tea.

Huma is one of those leaders who commands attention. She rarely repeats an outfit and is always fully accessorized from head to toe. When she’s on the red carpet, like at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner or the Met Gala, she selects designer pieces that speak to her unique style — it’s polished but colorful and rarely without a flash of metallics.
For her wedding to former Congressman Anthony Weiner, Huma wore a gilded Oscar de la Renta gown that made the fashion world stir. The pair have since separated, but an image of Huma in her embellished cap-sleeve dress will always live on in our minds. That, and the 22 bold style notes we’re taking from her. Read on to see why whenever Hillary’s around, we look for the sophisticated lady standing behind her.

Meghan Markle: On Being A Successful Career Woman

Meghan Markle is still firmly in the headlines thanks to her romance with Prince Harry, but she’s so much more than all that. She was cool before that, guys. Her mother has a Master’s degree in Social Work and her father is Emmy Award winner, Thomas W. Markle.

In 2016 she became the Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, visiting Rwanda for the Clean Water Campaign. She worked as an Advocate for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and has even made a presentation at UN Headquarters for the HeforShe gender equality campaign, as well as being the founder of The Tig and an actress in the media. That’s a lot on one woman’s plate.

Here’s what she had to say on her website about success and some of the motivation behind what she does.

Speak out on what matters to you.

‘I was just eleven years old when I was in my classroom at Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse and a commercial came on for a popular dish washing liquid. The tagline of the campaign said, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.” The boys in my classroom yelled out, “Yeah, that’s where women belong. In the kitchen.”

My little freckled face became red with anger. I went home and wrote letters to powerhouse feminist attorney, Gloria Allred; to a host of a kids news program; to the soup manufacturer; and to Hilary Clinton (who was our First Lady at the time). With the exception of the soap manufacturer, they all pledged support – and within a few months, the commercial was changed to, “People all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.”’

Get your priorities straight.

‘I’ve never wanted to be a lady who lunches – I’ve always wanted to be a woman who works.’

Be comfortable in your own skin .

‘My 20s were brutal – a constant battle with myself, judging my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as “whatever” as everyone else. My teens were even worse – grappling with how to fit in, and what that even meant.

… I want you to be kind to yourself. I want you to challenge yourself. I want you to stop gossiping, to try a food that scares you, to buy a coffee for someone just because, to tell someone you love them…and then to tell yourself right back. I want you to find your happiness.

I did. And it’s never felt so good.

I am enough.’

Set smart goals.

‘My New Year’s resolution is to leave room for magic. To make my plans, and be okay if they sometimes break. To set my goals, but to be open to change. To let the magic know that there is an open door policy with me in 2016 and that it is always welcome to join the party.’

Support other women .

‘It is said that girls with dreams become women with vision. May we empower each other to carry out such vision — because it isn’t enough to simply talk of equality. One must believe it. And it isn’t enough to simply believe in it. One must work at it. Let us work at it. Together. Starting now.’

The Stylish AMAs

With a stylish host like Gigi Hadid on the docket, you can bet the stars came to the American Music Awards prepared to duke it out for the spotlight. Before we get to admire their bedazzled on-stage costumes, the red carpet is stirring with sexy, swoon-worthy gowns, including Gigi’s Cavalli number and Ciara’s turtleneck gown, the very first on the scene. Scroll to see what everyone’s wearing, and don’t be surprised by the flashiness here. When music and fashion get involved, the award for “loudest look” is always up for grabs.

Meghan Markle: Lessons On Power Dressing

Meghan Markle is trending at the moment thanks to rumors of a romantic relationship with Prince Harry, and while people are delving into her life, reading into her every Instagram message and discussing her suitability as a member of the royal family (chill guys!) we decided we’d look into some of her finer moments as Rachel Zane in our favorite show, Suits.

If you haven’t started watching Suits yet, you definitely should. It’s a legal drama, but it can really teach you a thing or two about being a formidable boss, building relationships with your colleagues and dealing with drama. We love it! Meghan plays Rachel Zane, a paralegal climbing the corporate ladder who knows the importance of power dressing, so here are a few of our favorite outfits . . .

Try Soft Pinks

Soft pinks are often thought of as too feminine for power dressing, but Rachel proves this is not the case. You shouldn’t shy away from wearing the same color top and bottoms, create some contrast by looking for a top with movement that’s a slight variation of the shade of your bottoms – and you’ll nail this look.

A Good Old Pencil Skirt

Don’t knock a good old fashioned pencil skirt, especially in a dependable shade like gray. We often see Rachel wearing a staple skirt with some incredibly beautiful tops and shirts, all you need to do is find one that suits your body shape.

Lace Details

Lace can be classy and make you feel on top of the world if you pick up a beautiful lace detailed skirt all you need to do is pair it with a basic shirt, Rachel usually wears hers with the sleeves rolled up to give an effortless, laidback look.

All White

You don’t have to shy away from white (unless you’re clumsy!), Rachel often wears a fitted skirt and blouse in the same combo. This all-white outfit looks angelic and very chic. Find a shirt with some interesting white details and combine it with a basic skirt and white shoes.
