Though Pantone is predicting that green will rule in 2017, Hollywood’s leading ladies are currently captivated by shades of yellow. From saffron to acid lemon, the color has become a surefire way to standout amid a sea of LBDs and muted tonal looks. When Insecure star Issa Rae headed to The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Women in Entertainment breakfast yesterday, she did so in a printed dress from Ellery’s Resort collection that signaled her emergence as a fashion risk-taker to watch. Worn with hoop earrings and a contrasting zigzag-patterned clutch from Jimmy Choo, the look conceived by Rae and her stylist, Ayanna James, was one of the morning’s best.

At the same event, Emma Stone arrived wearing a canary color, crystal-detailed minidress from Giambattista Valli. Stylist Petra Flannery has always filled Stone’s wardrobe with bold shades, and during her La La Land press tour the actress has experimented with a series of memorably bright gowns, so it makes sense that Stone would have more than one great yellow piece in rotation. That same day she pulled out a flowing Rochas dress for her hand and footprint ceremony at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre, one that just happened to coordinate perfectly with the vivid outfit her character wears on the film’s poster.

Even models are getting in on the action; at last night’s Monica Vinader boutique opening, Karolina Kurkova wore a lacy neon creation from Lela Rose. Though Kurkova has a history of making everything from angel wings to couture look good, her choice of little yellow dress was especially compelling.

So what gives? Though it’s hard to quantify a trend adopted by multiple labels and stylists, the color does have one thing going for it. In the middle of winter with moods and weather conditions dreary, a jolt of yellow can be the ultimate mood booster. Who couldn’t use a little of that feel-good energy right now?
