Eight years ago this month, Bernie Madoff pleaded guilty to eleven felony charges, ranging from international money laundering and mail fraud, to false filings with the SEC. At the time of his sentencing, the New York Times described his criminal act as the “longest and most widespread Ponzi scheme in history.”
Now, HBO is turning the investigation into a docudrama called The Wizard of Lies. Robert De Niro, who also serves as an executive producer, is set to star as Madoff; Michelle Pfeiffer will portray Madoff’s wife, Ruth. A supporting cast that includes Alessandro Nivola, Nathan Darrow, Kristen Connolly, Lily Rabe, and Hank Azaria helps bring to life the deception, the cover-up, and the eventual unraveling of the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.
The Wizard of Lies will debut Saturday, May 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
